Knowmia @ EIU: Improving Accessibility for ALL Students

When creating lecture content, it is important to see accessibility as a priority, not an afterthought. The goal of online video lectures is to provide a way of learning for all students, whether they learn better from reading or listening. As one of the most well-known ways to be accessible, generating captions allows students with hearing impairments to watch videos and follow along by reading the corresponding captions. During this session we will also look at additional benefits that closed captions can provide all learners.

With recent updates to TechSmith Knowmia captioning features, adding closed captions to your videos has never been easier. We'll show you how to automatically transcribe your video's audio into captions via the speech-to-text generator, explore the robust caption editor, as well as an option to assign your videos to another user to help with the captioning process.

Here are some of the topics that will be covered:

  • Benefits of adding closed captions to your videos
  • How to begin generating captions via speech-to-text
  • Assign someone else to help edit captions
  • Overview of the caption editor and suggested workflow for editing
  • ADA compliance support

Personalize Your Course Interactions Using Video Note in D2L

Would you like to create and post a video message for students in a news announcement within your course without special software or the need to download, upload, and link to video files? What about providing a video overview of a content module or an assignment for your students? Do you want students to introduce themselves in a discussion forum by posting a video introduction? What about providing assignment feedback for students as a video note instead of typing your comments? All of this is possible using Video Note in D2L Brightspace. You can record a video note anywhere that you have access to the HTML editor within a course (news, content, discussions, dropbox folders, quizzes, grades, feedback, and more). The only equipment needed is a computer, webcam, and microphone. In this webinar, we will discuss/demonstrate:

  • How to record and insert a video note
  • How to generate captions for a video note
  • Differences between adding a video note and using the record video option
  • Suggested uses and best practices

The webinar will conducted through Zoom at the time listed. The Zoom meeting link will be sent to registrants in the confirmation and reminder emails. We recommend saving the meeting link on your calendar for easy access on the day of the webinar.

Create Custom Learning Paths in D2L using Release Conditions

Release conditions allow you to create a custom learning path through the materials in your course. When you attach a release condition to an item, users cannot see that item until they meet the associated condition. For example, you could attach a release condition to the second topic in your course’s content area that would hide that topic until users viewed the topic before it. Or you could create a condition that requires users to view a content topic before gaining access to a quiz, or one that required them to post to a discussion topic before they could see a content module. In this webinar, we will discuss/demonstrate:

  • How Release Conditions work
  • D2L Tools that support release conditions
  • How to access Release Conditions
  • Release condition types
  • Best practices for creating release conditions

If you would like to add release conditions to your course, register for the hands-on “Make and Take” webinar on Wednesday, March 3, at 2:00 PM. The “Make and Take” workshop is a companion session for this webinar. In the “Make and Take”, we will guide you step-by-step through the process of adding release conditions to your course in D2L.

The webinar will conducted through Zoom at the time listed. The Zoom meeting link will be sent to registrants in the confirmation and reminder emails. We recommend saving the meeting link on your calendar for easy access on the day of the webinar.
